Plumbing Inspection Section#3 Drain, Waste and Vent Plumbing Quiz#1

You should have finished Section 2 (Water Heaters) before starting this Section. This Study Session outlines the scope of plumbing inspection as set out in the Standards of Practice and includes some comments on the Standards. This section also includes a discussion of the basic principles of waste plumbing. The estimated completion time is one to one and a half hours.
Objectives
At the end of this study session, you should be able to:
  • Name the four basic components of the plumbing system that have to be inspected to meet the Standards.
  • List the five things the inspector is not required to observe in a plumbing inspection according to the Standards.
  • List and describe in one sentence each of the three different types of pipes in the drain, waste, and vent system.
  • Describe in one sentence the combination sewer system.
  • Describe in one sentence the function of a trap.
  • List the five components of a trap.
  • Explain in one sentence why a toilet does not need a trap.
  • List four different types of vents.
  • Describe in one sentence the function of the vent system.
  • Describe in one sentence the five foot rule and why it can be bent in certain areas.
  • Question 1

    Needs Grading
    Ungraded
Briefly describe the purpose of a trap primer.
    Selected Answer:
Trap primer is typically a 3/8 inch diameter plastic tube attached to a fixture that is used regularly. Every time a fixture is used, a little water flows through this primer and into the floor drain. This replaces any water in the trap that may have evaporated.
    Correct Answer:
    Correct
The purpose of a trap primer is to ensure there is always water in a floor drain trap to prevent sewer odors entering the home.
    Response Feedback:[None Given]
  • Question 2

    Needs Grading
    Ungraded
Describe the 5 foot rule in venting systems.
    Selected Answer:
The maximum distance from the trap to the vent is usually about 5 feet.
    Correct Answer:
    Correct
Vents must be within 5 feet of a trap to be effective because the point 5 feet away along a 1 1/4 inch pipe, which slopes at 1/4 per foot, could potentially be under water.
    Response Feedback:[None Given]
  • Question 3

    Needs Grading
    Ungraded
Describe the function of a trap.
    Selected Answer:
The main purpose of trap is to prevent sewer odors from coming back into the house. The trap under the fixture creates a low spot that is kept filled with water. Thie water gets pushed out of the trap and down the drain every time more water flows through the fixture, and as water flows out of the fixture, the last bit of water is left in the trap, forming a new seal to prevent odors from coming back up.
    Correct Answer:
    Correct
A trap prevents sewer gases from entering the house through the fixture drain outlet.
    Response Feedback:[None Given]
  • Question 4

    Needs Grading
    Ungraded
Explain briefly what is meant by a wet vent.
    Selected Answer:
A wet vent is a vent that also acts as a drain for another fixture. The often happens with a bathtub and a basin in a bathroom. The trap and drain below the bathtub are below the floor. The vent from the bathtub drain runs up through the wall. If the sink is nearby, the temptation to connect the drain from the sink into the tub vent pipe is almost irresistable.
    Correct Answer:
    Correct
A wet vent occurs when the drain for one fixture is serving as the vent for another.
    Response Feedback:[None Given]
  • Question 5

    Selected Answer:
Because the boilet bowl itself is a trap.
    Correct Answer:
    Correct
The toilet bowl itself is a trap
