Heating I Section#2 Hot Water Boiler Quiz#5

This study session deals with methods of delivering the heat to the rooms of the house.
The estimated completion time for this study session is sixty minutes.
Objectives
At the end of this study session, you should be able to:
  • List and describe the four styles of heat delivery that are used with boilers.
  • List the eight problems found with radiators, convectors and baseboards.
  • List the four problems found with radiant heating.
Describe the procedure that can be used to check for leaking radiant floor piping.
1. Turn off the boiler supply water valve and turn off the boiler electrical supply.
2. Watch for a drop in pressure at the temperature/pressure gauge on the boiler, indicating leakage out of the piping into the slab.

List the four styles of heat delivery that are used with boilers.
1. Radiator
2. Convector
3. Baseboard
4. Radiant piping.

What is the purpose of the bleed valve near the top of the radiator?
This allows the homeowner to remove trapped air from the radiator, letting the radiator fill with water and heat the room effectively.

Why do balancing valves and bleed valves tend to leak when operated?
Because they are turned rarely, the valve packing dries out and shrinks. When the valve is disturbed, a leak occurs here.

Do radiant piping systems need bleed valves, since there are no radiators?
Yes

What is the maximum ceiling temperature you would want to have in an eight foot room with radiant pipe heating?
110F

Where should a radiator be placed in a room?
On an exterior wall below a window

If you find a radiator with the balancing valve completely shut off, then there will be no water in the rad.
False

Mixing convectors and radiators in a single hydronic system will often result in uncomfortable heating.
True
