Heating I Section#1 Furnace - Gas and Oil Quiz#5

This study session deals with thermostats and venting systems.
The estimated completion time for this study session is ninety minutes.
Objectives
At the end of this study session, you should be able to:
  • Describe in three sentences the basic workings of a mercury bulb thermostat.
  • List seven conditions found with thermostats.
  • Describe the function of the venting system, in one sentence.
  • List eleven conditions that are found with vent connectors.
Describe briefly the purpose of the anticipator in mechanical thermostat
The anticipator fools the thermostat into thinking it is warmer than it actually is. This means the thermostat will shut the furnace off early, so the house won't overheat.

If there is a chimney clean out below the vent connection to the chimney, you should look up it to see .
obstructions in the chimney; the connection between the vent connector and the chimney; if the vent connector extends too far into the chimney.

List 5 of the key points which help to make a venting system work properly..
1. Keep combustion products inside the exhaust system
2. Keep the exhaust path as short and straight as possible
3. Slope the vent connector up to the vent
4. Keep the chimney as warm as possible
5. Make sure the vent connector and vent are properly sized for the appliance
6. When manifolding, don't obstruct one appliance
7. Keep vents away from combustibles
8. Ensure adequate dilution air
9. Share flues for gas appliances only with other gas appliances, unless there are special circumstances.

List 6 conditions found with vents.
1. Sections not secured together
2. Rusted or pitted
3. Poor support
4. Poor slope
5. Too long
6. Inadequate combustible clearances
7. Too small or too big for furnace
8. Improper material
9. Poor manifolding
10. Extends too far into chimney
11. Spillage
12. Obstruction

List 7 conditions you may find with a mechanical thermostat.
1. Poor location
2. Not level
3. Loose
4. Dirty
5. Damaged
6. Poor adjustment/calibration
7. Anticipator problems.

List the 3 components of the venting system.
1. Draft hood
2. Vent connector
3. Vent.

What is a typical combustible clearance for a B vent type vent connector?
1 inch clearance for a B vent.

What is the typical combustible clearance for a single wall vent?
6 inch clearance

A heating thermostat located in a kitchen will tend to:
Keep the rest of the house cooler than you want it

The smaller output appliance vent must connect into the chimney above or below the vent from the larger output appliance?
Above

The vent connector should slope:
Upward going away from the furnace at a minimum quarter inch a foot

We would prefer to see vent connectors:
Less than 5 feet long

If the anticipator setting is too low for the current flow from the gas valve, the house will overshoot.
False
