  • Question 1

Explain how framing shrinkage can cause inappropriate sill slope.
    Selected Answer:
Sill extends out over the brick veneer and straddle the wood frame and brick veneer. As the wood frame shrinks, the window drops. This drops the inner half of the windowsill. The outer edge of the windowsill can't drop because it is resting on the brick wall. The windowsill typically tips and ends up with a reverse slope.
    Correct Answer:
    Correct
The windowsill spans the brick veneer and the wood frame wall. As the frame shrinks, the sill is twisted inwards, because the brick doesn?t shrink. This allows water on the sill to run towards the frame, which causes deterioration.
